Fairfax, CA - Information & Property Search

Fairfax

Sunny Fairfax is the western-most town in East Marin.  It has a reputation as a hippie enclave, and the town motto is "Only in Fairfax."  Despite its eclectic reputation, Fairfax is known in Marin as a friendly, relaxed, family-oriented town.

The Town of Fairfax is surrounded by preserved open space.  It is the jumping off point for the outdoor recreation destinations Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Marin Municipal Watershed.  The Watershed is a natural wild area featuring seven blue lakes.  The land around Fairfax has great biological diversity and is a choice spot for daytime recreation such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing and picnicking.

Like all of Marin, Fairfax has a long history as a railroad and ranching town during the Gold Rush days.  It was the site of the fashionable Marin Town and Country Club in the 1920's through the Forties.  But Fairfax's most exciting history is that it was the setting for dozens of western movies from 1910 to approximately 1923.  Several early movie companies filmed here, and many local cowboys were used as extras.  Fairfax had its own movie studio, United Keanograph Studio.

People in this small town love to have good, clean fun.  The major celebration of the year is the Fairfax Festival in June.  Folks come from all over Marin (and beyond) to revel in the myriad entertainments.  This two-day festival starts off with a rocking parade down Broadway.  Visit the arts and crafts booths to find handmade ceramics, clothing, jewelry and fine art.  There are kids' activities, a flea market, the Eco Fest, and loads of local food and drink.  But most people go for the music.  Two stages offer continuous live music, featuring local greats, music legends, and a youth music showcase.  Live music is a big part of life in Fairfax.  On any night of the year you can listen to live music in one venue or another.

Fairfax is a very environmentally conscious town.  The first town in Marin to ban plastic bags, it is the host of the annual Eco Fest, where you can learn from local environmental groups, taste organic food, beer and wine, and shop for organic goods and services.  Fairfax is also home to the new Sustainability Center, which provides a practical demonstration of earth-friendly practices, as well as being an education and resource center.  Fairfax prides itself on being a politically active, liberal community.

Downtown Fairfax offers a diverse assortment of unique shops, restaurants, cafes and nightclubs.  You don't have to drive to find healthy, ethnic dining with quality Mid-Eastern, Thai, Italian and Mexican (to name a few) restaurants right here.  There's a coffee roastery and an award-winning brewery.  The locals favor Peri's and 19 Broadway for live entertainment, but several nightclubs and cafes offer live music.  Unlike many small town city centers, Fairfax supports numerous independent merchants for an uplifting shopping experience.  Of course, everyone shops at the Fairfax Farmers' Market in Bolinas Park on Wednesday evenings from May through October.
